Can you see the Great Barrier Reef on a tour?
Yes. The snorkel days visit fringing reefs inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and the flights circle Heart Reef. No boat day here goes out to the outer reef.
Is there a half-day tour?
Yes, several. The jet boat runs 30 minutes, the jet ski and the sunset sail about 2.5 hours, Cedar Creek Falls and the Segway 3 hours and the hinterland bus 4 hours. The flights are shorter still.
Can you take a helicopter tour?
Yes. One private helicopter tour flies over Heart Reef and lands on Whitehaven Beach for about 90 minutes. It seats two or three and costs $1,112 a person.
Is lunch included?
On every Whitehaven Beach boat day and on Tongarra and Wings III, yes; the helicopter serves snacks and drinks. The half-day trips serve snacks or nothing, the hinterland bus stops at a diner at your cost, and the charters charge $30 a head for catering.
Can you swim at Airlie Beach?
Yes, in the lagoon all year: it is stinger-free, with lifeguards. Boathaven Beach has a stinger net in the summer months. In the sea, stingers can be present in any month, so wear a stinger suit.
How do you get to Airlie Beach?
Fly to Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine, about 40 minutes away, or to Hamilton Island and take the ferry. The Spirit of Queensland train stops at Proserpine, and the town is about 20 minutes' drive off the Bruce Highway.
Can cruise-ship passengers do a tour?
Yes, with care. The hinterland bus and the Cedar Creek bus are built around port schedules, and Wings III needs your tender ashore before 3:45pm. Big Fury, Ocean Rafting and ZigZag say their times do not suit ships.
Can children come on the tours?
On most. Fly Australia takes infants on laps, the jet boat from age 5 and 120 cm, and Tongarra from 12, while jet ski drivers must be 16. The Prosail sails are normally 18 and over.
Is the lagoon in town free?
Yes. The Airlie Beach Lagoon is open every day from 4:30am to 6pm, with lifeguards all year, and it is stinger-free, according to Tourism Whitsundays.
How far ahead should I book?
As soon as your dates are fixed, and earliest for August, which Tourism Whitsundays says books out first. Most fares refund up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs you little if plans change.
Are there any special offers?
The hinterland bus, the Tongarra sail and the Whitehaven full-day cruise from Shute Harbour carried end-of-September offers when the listings were captured on 21 September 2026. The price on each card is the offer price, so check the end date at checkout.
Is there a public holiday surcharge?
On the Ocean Rafting tours, yes. They add $20 per adult, $10 per child or $50 per family on Queensland public holidays.
Do the tours include hotel pickup?
Many do: the jet ski, the hinterland and Segway tours, the Dingo Beach day, Ocean Rafting's courtesy bus and the Whitehaven full-day cruise from Shute Harbour. Big Fury, Wings, ZigZag, Prosail and OzSail meet you at Coral Sea Marina.
Do I pay per person or per boat?
Per person on everything but the private charters. Those are priced per group of up to eight, from $2,769. The helicopter and the sunset yacht are private but still priced per person.
Should I sail or take a fast boat?
Sailing days are longer and slower, with more time on deck. The raft and the speedboat reach Whitehaven Beach fastest, and the big catamarans are the steadiest, with seats inside.
Is there a private tour?
The private charters take your own group of up to eight on a route you plan with the skipper, priced per boat. The helicopter and the sunset yacht are private too, priced per person.
Can I sail overnight?
Yes. Prosail's Hammer and Condor, OzSail's 'Spank Me' and the trimaran Avatar each spend two nights among the islands. Bunks and meals are in the fare, drinks are not.
Is there a tour that does not involve a boat?
Yes: the hinterland bus, the Cedar Creek Falls trip, the Dingo Beach and Cape Gloucester day, the Segway and the flights. The helicopter lands on the sand, but the two plane flights do not land.
Do I need to be able to swim to snorkel?
Wings III says non-swimmers stay on board, and Big Fury recommends snorkelling only for swimmers. Several boats supply flotation noodles, and everyone can stay on board.
Are drinks included?
Rarely beyond water, tea and coffee. Most boats sell drinks or let you bring your own, and Wings III, Tongarra and Prosail are bring-your-own. Camira pours drinks in the fare, and the sunset sail pours champagne.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, a towel, a hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. Wear closed shoes for the island walks, and bring a layer for winter evenings on deck.
Do tours run in bad weather?
The jet ski runs in most weather and the hinterland bus rain or shine. Flights depend on the weather, and boats may change their route, so book a flight early in your stay.
How long is the jet ski tour?
About 2.5 hours including the briefing, with about two hours on the water. You pick one of three routes, and lunch comes only with the Ultimate Island Trek.
Where do the tours leave from?
Mostly from Coral Sea Marina, which has several meeting points, the Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour. The flights leave from Whitsunday Airport at Flametree, and the road trips collect you in town.
Can you drive to Whitehaven Beach?
No. It is on Whitsunday Island, reached by boat, canoe or kayak, so nobody can drive to Whitehaven Beach. You go by boat from the marinas or land on it by helicopter.
How far is Cedar Creek Falls?
About 30 minutes from town by sealed road, according to Tourism Whitsundays. There is no Cedar Creek Falls entry fee: the falls are free, and the fare pays for the ride and the guide.
Is Whitsunday Airport the same as Whitsunday Coast Airport?
No. Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine is where the airlines land. Whitsunday Airport at Flametree is the small airfield the scenic flights leave from.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
Only OzSail's 'Spank Me' listing says it is; ask the operator what that covers. The Airlie Beach Lagoon has disabled access, according to Tourism Whitsundays.
Are there weight limits on the flights?
Yes. Fly Australia allows 130 kg per seat and weighs every passenger, Ocean Rafting's flight 125 kg, and the helicopter 130 kg per seat.
Can I go if I am pregnant?
The jet ski, the jet boat, Big Fury, Tongarra and Ocean Rafting advise against it. Ask your doctor and the operator before you book anything on the water.
When can you see whales?
