Fly Australia flies from Whitsunday Airport at Flametree, the airfield the scenic flights use near Airlie Beach. It also goes by Shute Harbour Airport. It is not Whitsunday Coast Airport, the airline airport at Proserpine about 40 minutes away, so check which one your taxi is heading for. You check in at the passenger lounge 30 minutes before your flight, and the pilot briefs you there.
The flight itself is about 60 minutes, and the whole trip takes an hour and a half. Flight time is an estimate, and it moves with the wind, the cloud and other air traffic. Heart Reef is the picture most people book for: a small reef in the shape of a heart. Tourism Whitsundays says a local pilot found it in 1975, in Hardy Reef, about 80 km east of Airlie Beach. None of the boat days we list goes there; every trip that shows it does so from the air.
Over it, the pilot makes gentle turns so that both sides of the plane get their turn at the window. One reviewer called the heart the moment of the trip; another had rain on the day and saw rainbows over the reef instead. On the way, the plane crosses Whitsunday Island to Hill Inlet, at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. The pilot makes two passes, so each side of the cabin looks straight down on the white sand swirling through the blue channels. From the air you see the whole shape of the inlet at once, which the lookout on the ground cannot show you.
You do not set foot on the beach. If you want to stand at that lookout too, the ocean-raft day walks up to it and gives you about two hours on the sand. One reviewer flew first and went out by boat the next day, and was glad to have seen both.
The last stretch runs low over the outer reef, and it is where the wildlife shows up. By the operator's account, whales, manta rays and sharks are often spotted from up there. One reviewer's pilot spotted breaching whales on a lunchtime flight. The whale months are May to September, peaking in August, so a winter flight gives you the best chance.
The reef itself looks different from above: flats, channels and deep blue water, far from land. None of the boat days we list goes out that far, so for many visitors this is their only look at the outer reef. The seasons for whales and clear skies are on the best time to visit page.
Small planes are balanced by weight, and this one is strict about it. The limit is 130 kg a passenger, and everyone is weighed at check-in. Over the limit on the day, you do not fly and the fare is not refunded. The crew also seat people for balance, so members of one booking may not sit together.
Every seat has a window, and not every window is equal. One reviewer sat by the door with more metal and less glass; another, in the front seat, found the plane itself blocked much of the view; a third found the headset static made the commentary hard to follow. Ask about seating when you check in, and bring sunglasses for the glare.
You are short of time, cannot swim, or get seasick on small boats. It suits families (infants ride on a lap, and infant seats are available), couples and anyone who wants Heart Reef, which only a flight shows. It also fits between days on the water.
You weigh over 130 kg, or you want to stand on the sand. The private helicopter with a beach landing puts you on Whitehaven Beach for about 90 minutes. To fly and then snorkel on the same day, the fly-and-raft day costs $401. For the water instead, the ocean-raft day costs $180.
You meet at the Fly Australia lounge, 12 Air Whitsunday Road, Flametree, 30 minutes before your booked flight. Parking at the airfield is free while you fly. If you are staying in Airlie Beach and have no car, ask for the courtesy bus, which runs on request from two stops in town.
