The guided jet ski tour
Fast, friendly and safe throughout. The guide made sure everyone had a good time, whatever their skill level or appetite for speed.

Half a day, and you are the one driving. A guide leads a small line of jet skis out of the marina and into the islands, and you ride behind. You pick one of three routes, from the bays near town to a resort lunch on Long Island. No experience is needed. You do need to swim in a lifejacket and follow the guide.
Ride it solo, or share it with a friend on the twin-share fares.
Pioneer Bay, a 50 km run to two islands, or a 70 km trek with lunch.
A vest, sunglasses or goggles and a hat, plus all the safety kit.
A courtesy coach from Airlie Beach to the check-in office and back.
Up to 12 jet skis on the water, with a guide leading the line.
The second most-reviewed trip out of town, from $93 a person.
Whitsunday Jetski Tours sells one trip in three shapes, and you choose when you book. The Airlie Adventure stays close, riding round the bays and beaches of Pioneer Bay. It suits beginners and confident riders alike. The guide keeps up a commentary, and you may spot turtles, sea birds or, if you are lucky, a dugong. The Two Island Safari covers about 50 km and takes you out to South Molle and Daydream islands.
The Ultimate Island Trek is the long one, about 70 km. It runs to Palm Bay Resort on Long Island for a poolside lunch of woodfired pizza, salads and chips, then rides back. It is for solo riders only, because of the distance. Both island routes also ask for above-average fitness and confidence in open water, so the bay route is the one for a first ride. The other ways onto the water from town are on Airlie Beach boat tours.
A jet ski takes one or two people, up to 230 kg in all. Ride solo and you drive the whole way. Share, on the Airlie Adventure or the Two Island Safari, and a friend rides with you. The fare shown is the lowest; the booking page prices each route and each way of riding.
Drivers must be 16 or over. Riders from eight can come as the second person on a shared ski. That makes the bay route a family option with teenagers or older children, while the long trek, solo only, is not. Everyone must be able to swim wearing a lifejacket, and you must speak English to follow the briefing.
This is a guided ride, not a hire. The group follows the guide in a line, at the pace the guide sets, and stops together. That is what keeps a dozen skis safe among the islands, and it is also the trip's main trade-off. One reviewer wanted more free time on the ski; another felt the day did not give enough freedom for the fare.
The speed is real. One rider new to jet skis found it hard to keep up at 50 to 60 km/h; another reported touching 70 km/h over the waves, and seeing turtles and a stingray on the same ride. If you are nervous, say so at the briefing. One first-time driver wrote that the fear faded once the ride got going.
The trip starts on land. At the check-in office you meet your guide and sit through an orientation and safety briefing before anyone starts an engine. Several reviewers called the briefing clear, and one found it fun as well as useful. Then you pull on the gear: a vest, sunglasses or goggles, and a hat, all provided.
Bottled water comes with every route. Food does not, except on the Ultimate Island Trek, where lunch at the resort is in the fare. Bring sunscreen and a layer you do not mind getting wet; the trip runs in most weather, and spray is part of it. How the wind and temperatures run across the year is on the Airlie Beach weather page.
You want a thrill in half a day, with hotel pickup and no experience needed. It suits couples, friends and families with teenagers who can share a ski. It fits round a longer island day, too, because it leaves you the rest of the day free.
You are pregnant or have back or heart problems; the listing advises against all three. For speed without driving, the 30-minute jet boat ride takes riders from five. To see the islands and stay dry, take the hour-long scenic flight. Other half-day choices are on Airlie Beach half-day tours.
The trip starts and ends at Airlie Adventure Central, 38 Shingley Drive, in the South Village of Coral Sea Marina. Most riders never walk there: a courtesy coach collects you from your accommodation in town and brings you back. Reconfirm your pickup time 24 hours before, with your accommodation or the operator.
If you are staying on an island, there is no pickup. Hamilton Island and the other island resorts are left out, and you make your own way to the marina for the start. The ferries from Hamilton Island are on the how to get to Airlie Beach page, and every marina meeting point is on the departure map.

The guided jet ski tour
The safety briefing was fun and useful for first-time riders. Soon after that you are out on the water, and it gets exciting.

The guided jet ski tour
The guide and the skis were good, but we wanted more freedom and to see more. For the cost, the value did not quite add up for us.
